Where to buy your souvenirs in Canada
Hi our adventurous friends,
we used to buy most of our souvenirs at the expensive shops in the national parks; where most of the stuff is made in China. So we found other stores and created a list of some of our favorite souvenir shops for you.
Dollarama is like the name says a $-store with a broad assortment of everyday consumer products, general merchandise and seasonal items all up to $4. Right after Easter they fill their shelves with Canada souvenirs. They sell Canadian flags, hats, mugs, etc. Even the famous dream catchers you can find there for only $2.50. They are probably not made in Canada just like the overpriced ones at the souvenir shop. Let's be honest, like your friends and family could tell the difference.
Hudson's Bay is the oldest company in North America and they sell everything from make up to clothes to kitchen appliances. They have a Canada collection where you can find pillows, Canada Birch Pillar candles and interesting bottle openers. They also have a Canadian Olympic Team Collection that supports Canadian athletes. There you can find Canadian themed clothes, jewelry and other accessories. I got all my Canada t-shirts and sweatshirt from that collection, because you can't just have one. The prices are pretty reasonable and most of the time they have special sales where you can save up to 50%. This year, as Canada is celebrating its 150 birthday, the Hudson's Bay have their limited-edition Grand Portage collection. You can find everything from a paddle and keychain, to clothing and accessories for women, men and kids.
Roots is a Canadian company that sells women, man and kids clothing, shoes and accessories. At the moment they have a Canada150 collection with Canadian themed clothing and if that's not Canadian enough they have a NICE collection. 100% of the profits from every purchase of a nice™ button or limited-edition enamel pin supports Indigenous Youth Empowerment Programming. That is not just a perfect souvenir but you also help locals. It's a win win.
4. Local markets and shops
For those who want to get special or customized gifts I would recommend to visit local markets and shops. In Calgary I would recommend Lilacs n' Wood a Calgary based company. They sell greeting cards and Canadian wood plates. Check out their homepage or Instagram and if you want get in touch with the artist herself Aislaule. It is the perfect gift for someone who appreciates art and wants to support local businesses. We got one as a present and we absolutely love it!
